Get on America's Level Actually if you use the regular IOC medal count criteria, USA was third place. That's because 1 GOLD > 1 Silver > 1 Bronze. So USA was 3rd place, behind Canada (14 golds, new record) and Germany. But if you count total medals, USA got first place. However, this is not the way medals are count, for example, in the Summer Games.... or maybe it changes according to USA interests?

That ^ USA USA USA For example, if the USA was not in the top 3 under any current criteria with, say, 15 overall medals, we would change the rules to, "Whoever has exactly 15 medals wins."
